A Forever Home

By Holly Antoun

She thought he was cute
He thought she was cute.
It was a blistery December night
in Denver
That he put his bowling ball down
And messaged her.

“Who wears Vans in the snow?”
he laughed at her,
leaning against the brick wall
at the Prohibition Bar,
all curly haired and casual
in his black and white
checkered Vans.

At work, at Booj,
his fish met her Offish
and they officially began
an eight year
whirlwind courtship.

Lilies and love notes.
Trips to England, Spain
and Germany.
Croatia, Bermuda
and Italy.

They did yoga,
cup-in-hand kickball and corn hole.
Then a bold move together.
Denver to the skies of San Francisco,
the city sparkling
beneath them.

Dancing in the streets,
an artsy lobster,
and a curly chestnut bundle of noise –
brown-eyed baby Otto.
They call him “Dish” or “Sheeshers”.

Sushi Sundays,
Taco Tuesdays,
Date Night Wednesdays.

Then, in a downpour in early afternoon,
surrounded by sheep and rainbows
on the Cliffs of Moher,
he knelt and sealed
what they both knew
to be true…

They had found the best love ever –
a forever home
in each other’s arms.
And they are still SO cute.
